Wednesday Evening, May 20, 1997: It was the nal evening of the Tony Evans Crusade. e rst two nights had been extremely successful. ey had been successful for crowd turnout, but more im- portantly they had been successful for the ones going forward at the end of the ser- vices to receive Christ.
For the third night we were in a police es- corted convoy as we left the hotel on Main Street and headed for Williams-Brice Sta- dium. About half way to the stadium, my cell phone went o and it was our public- ity agent who was driving in to Columbia from Charlotte.
“Joe,” he said. “I am in the worst rain storm I have ever been in, in my life. I am very concerned for the Crusade Event to- night.” I listened carefully and calmly be- fore terminating the call. I announced to

Don was so angry with me that his face was red as a beet and the veins in his neck were pop- ping while his index nger jabbed at me in the air like a sharp sword being wielded
by a swashbuckler pirate. It was clear that he would like to cut o my head as he shouted at me from across the dinner table, “ at’s ne for you, but that’s not for me; and furthermore, I don’t like people trying to push religion down my throat and try- ing to get me converted!” Whoa. I had not seen that coming! Who would have thought that our conversation would have caused Don to explode like that?
Joe and I were aboard a cruise ship in the Bahamas...a ve-day business trip with other people from the same auto franchise company...people we had known and been associated with for eight to ten years. As far as I was concerned, we were having a normal, pleasant conversation about busi- ness, family, and friends. Commenting on his father, Don had said, “You know, it’s really sad.
