Sheila Campbell of Sumter called the event “awesome-some- thing South Carolina needs.” Pam Phil- lips of Columbia brought her two children, Matthew, 12, and Melody, 10, because she wanted them to experience the event. Their father, the Rev. Steve Phillips, minister of music at First Baptist Church of Columbia, directed the volunteer choir and brought home considerable enthusiasm after the choir rehearsals, she said. “We wanted to come to say that we’re standing up for what this is about,” she said.
