WHAT DO CHRISTIANS DO FOR FUN?
By Joe Grimaud | Continued From Page 6
thought it would be a neat trip to take with my son and go somewhere on a unique trip where we had never been, plus see if we could do some good fishing while we were at it. It was the middle of the winter as well as the school year, so we planned a trip for the mid summer. The only problem was that with poor planning on my part, my Lake Amphibian came due for its annual inspection right at the time we had planned to go.
Not to be deterred, since I also had a Cessna airplane out at the Winnsboro airport, we de- cided we would go anyway, but that Keith and I would fly in my Cessna into the small town of Val d’Orr Quebec, and Bob would drive up and meet us there, and then we would proceed further north to the fish camp. When Bob met us in Val d’Orr he was pulling a quite large (and heavy) aluminum boat, which we would use for fishing and he planned on selling to the owner of the fish camp at the end of our trip.
Now, Val d’Orr is quite far north in Canada, but the f ish camp was about 100 miles north of that. After meeting Bob, along with his Sister and Brother and Law who had decided to come along we headed north in his Pontiac Station Wagon which had about 300,000 miles on it. Half way to the fish camp and miles from nowhere we suddenly realized the boat trailer had a problem. The axle had broken. Bob had brought along a few tools, so we took the axle off of the trailer and Bob and his relatives
headed back the fifty miles or so to Val d’Orr, leaving Keith and me on the side of the road with the boat. Now this was no ordinary situ- ation. We were on a paved road all right, but in the four hours or so that we waited we saw about three vehicles and every one of them were logging trucks. I kept thinking, “I wonder if they are going to come back for us.” But they did finally come back. We reinstalled the axle and headed on another 50 miles or so further into the wilderness to the fish camp.
We had some great fishing catching Northern Pike and Wall Eye fish just about as soon as we threw the hook into the water. We had a cabin right by the stream leading to our fishing lake, and there is just something special when you take fresh fish and fry them right by the lake and deep fry some French fries to go along with them. I can still savor the taste and aroma. But it was also a special time to have devotions and thank God for allowing us to get there safely and enjoy this special treat.
But Bob was not done. He knew of another lake, but we would have to pull the boat over a dirt road about 30 miles to get to it. The next morning we headed out, leaving the ladies in the cabin at the fish camp. When we got to this lake the dirt ramp where you could put the boat in was about 100 yards long and quite steep to the inlet well below. Not to be deterred we backed the boat down the hill and went on our way in the big aluminum boat.
