The fishing was equally good, but when we came back and loaded the boat on the trailer the wheels on the car would not get enough traction to pull the boat up the hill which was quite rocky. So while Bob drove the car, Keith, I, and his Brother-in-law got behind the car and pushed. The rocks flying from under the wheels pounded us all, but we just had to ac- cept the punishment and keep on pushing or we would be stranded in the middle of nowhere until searchers came looking for us.
While traveling down the 30-mile dirt road, Bob noticed his gas gauge was going down fast and getting perilously low. We still had 20 miles of dirt road without a single car or dwelling to go to get back to camp. When we stopped to examine the car, we found that a rock had punctured a hole in the gas tank about as big as one’s thumb, and we were rapidly depleting the fuel. I asked if anyone had some chewing gum. They did. We all had a big chew and
then I molded the gum together and stuffed it in the hole, hoping it would at least let us get back to the fish camp. With some very fervent praying, God allowed us to make it back. Since the fish camp had a country store that had a bit of everything one would need in the wilderness, I went there and bought some large sheet metal screws and some epoxy and made a more per- manent patch so we could get back home when it came time to go.
It was one great trip with some memorable ex- periences. So much so that we decided to plan another trip for the following year and this time I would do better planning so we could fly up in my Lake Amphibian. Bob has gone on to Heaven now and when we get there we will be able to spend a thousand years or so reminisc- ing over those fun times and sharing them with Jesus. He already knows, but you come back next month and we will share another trip, with even more memories.
