My Joe did a most unconventional thing for me this Valentine’s Day. I would have cer- tainly been happy with the traditional roses and chocolate, but what he did meant so much more. Hewentoutofhiswaytoshowmethat he had spent some time thinking about how he could express his love for me and how impor- tantIwastohim. Sohereiswhathedid. He purchased five of the most beautiful Valentine cards and wrote love messages in each one and then strewn them around the house in obvious but not so obvious places. By the time I had found the fifth card, I was walking on a cloud, because he had proven by this thought-out pro- cedure that he was thinking of how important Iamtohim.
You have heard it said, “To have a friend, be one.” You can also use the Triple-A Formula that goes like this: Accept, Approve, And Ap- preciate.
1. Accept. Accept people – warts and all. That is called respect. Respect is central for good, lasting relationships and is different than admiration. Romantic admiration thrives and depends on the illusion that he or she is “per- fect for you.” Conflict comes when you try to CHANGE your friend (mate) back into your fantasy.
2. Approve. Accentuate the positive. Find a characteristic or quality that you value in the other person and let him know it. It goes be- yond just tolerating another’s faults and finds something positive to like.
3. Appreciate. The word “appreciate” really means to “raise in value.” When you appreci- ate a person, figure out ways to let him know you value him highly, just as Joe did in such a creative manner.
Take this message to heart, and someday, you will have great joy when your friends knock on your door wanting you to introduce them to Jesus.
