echoed "He is risen indeed" when
addressed with the exciting though famil-
iar phrase "He is risen."
Here is how the marvelous event is re-
counted by our Lord Jesus Christ himself:
Then he opened their minds to understand the
Scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it is writ-
ten, that the Christ should suffer and on the third
day rise from the dead,
and that repentance
and forgiveness of sins
should be proclaimed in
his name to all nations,
beginning from Jeru-
salem. You are wit-
nesses of these things.
And behold, I am send-
ing the promise of my
Father upon you. But
stay in the city until you
are clothed with power
from on high."
Luke 24:45-49 (ESV)
This promise of power was fulfilled in what
has become known in the church as The
Day of Pentecost. The Holy Spirit was
dramatically demonstrated and as the gos-
pel was received by three thousand people
who were promptly baptized and began
sharing the story of Easter. "He is risen!"
Matthew, the converted, transformed tax col-
lector recounts for all of us what is after Easter.
And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority
in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you. And be-
hold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)
Greek scholars tell
us that the impact
of this commission
is as follows:
"As you are going,
therefore, make disci-
ples of all the nations."
All of the Christian
church is going. To-
day thousands will
board airplanes and
go. Millions will
board trains and sub-
ways and go. Millions more will get into
cars and go. Many, many will walk to and
from their place of employment, their gar-
den, the store or multitudes of other places.
As you are going, wherever, however and
whenever you are going, make disciples.
That's what comes after Easter.
