Our rental beach house came back into
view and, off to my left, I noticed two
porpoises playing close to shore...their
graceful backs breaking the surface of the
water teasing us to stop and enjoy the per-
formance. The long walk had been invigo-
rating and created an appetite that had to
be satisfied. Joe and I climbed the stairs
to the porch and sat down in the rocking
chairs for a minute's rest and to watch the
porpoise ballet until they were out of sight.
Once inside, I busied myself making
sandwiches. Joe settled down with his
sandwich and glass of milk in his favor-
ite brown leather recliner chair where
he spent most of his time working on
his computer or crossword puzzle while
listening to the news. He laid aside the
crossword puzzle, reached for his turkey
and tomato sandwich and took a big bite
out of it, munched on some Garden Salsa
chips, and then reached for a swallow of
milk. I settled down on the sofa beside his
recliner and together we watched the news
alert blaze across the television screen.
"Well, what's this?" Joe mumbled as an-
other alert popped upon the screen.
The President had just come from Saudi
Arabia where he had bowed lowly before
Islamic leaders, saying to them, "America
is no longer a Christian nation and Islam
has contributed a great deal to the shaping
of America!"
A burrowed brow traced across Joe's face.
He was eating his sandwich a little slower
now with his eyes still fastened on the news
alert. This was the beginning of a series of
events that played out during our month-
long anniversary in Myrtle Beach that
would cause Joe to take surprising action
when we returned home. I had seen this
stirring in my husband before and knew
that God was speaking, but I would have
to remain patient until he was ready for
disclosure. Whatever it was, I knew that
it had to do with the soul of America, and,
just like I have always done, I would stand
by his side encouraging him to answer the
call of God on his life and help him fight
the good fight of faith.
