e have just
recentl y
commemorated
the 15th year of
the start of City
Light and with it
the Tony Evans
Crusade in 1997.
It occurs to me
that there are a series of articles that
might be written concerning that event
which might be appropriate, interesting,
and leave a history of our beginning.
When did it start? For me it might
have started in 1934 in Charlotte in
what was called the Ham-Ramsay
Revival. The evangelist was Mor-
decai Ham and the song leader was
WJ Ramsay. It was in this revival
that Billy Graham dedicated his life
to Christ. But the greater impact for
me was that it was the same revival
during which my father, Joseph A
Grimaud, Sr., found Christ and, at
age 25, launched him on a dedicated
exemplary life of Christianity, preach-
ing and family rearing that included a
dramatic impact on his fourth child,
Joe, Jr. I have heard my father say
many times that when Mordecai
Ham said his sins were like a stack
of filthy rags, he saw himself just like
that and he didn't like what he saw.
He moved at that moment to change
courses. He went forward and ac-
cepted Christ.
Or it might have started with a young
black man growing up on Wheeler
Hill in a segregated society. This
young man was Reverend Eddie
Guess who sponsored a black Chris-
tian motivational speaker to come
and speak in high schools across
Columbia. While the speaker was
in town he was invited to be a guest
